Faslane 365 Students
Summer Blockade and Strident Camp

The Strident Tent State has come to a consensus decision to assure the public and police that there will be no direct action to disrupt the daily running of Faslane or Coulport for the whole of Sunday 1st July. This is so as not to divert Strathclyde police resources from investigating the incident which occurred at Glasgow International Airport on Saturday afternoon. Having liaised with the police, Strident students will continue to have a presence outside the bases to express their underlying concerns over Trident.

Monday Actions

Early on Monday morning groups set out to blockade both the Faslane and Coulport bases. The Northern Access Road at Coulport was blockaded fully for 1 hour, while the shore road and the construction gate roads of Coulport were also obstructed. Meanwhile, the South gate at Faslane was completely closed and the North gate was disrupted for 35 minutes. In total there were 37 arrests.

Sunny Sunday

Since we had decided not to undertake arrestable action, we set off in high spirits to have a tea party at Coulport instead, complete with workshops on queer politics, acro and samba. There were delicious vegan scones and awesome cake. Throughout the day there were workshops back at camp, including Plane Stupid, a vital and exciting direct action project aimed at preventing the destruction of Europe's largest wilderness in Iceland (see http://www.savingiceland.org and http://www.nukewatch.org.uk

Saturday at Strident

There were more workshops on Saturday motning. We were joined by a member of CIRCA, the Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown army, who ran basic clown training sessions. There were workshops on Eco-Unis, the Sussex Tent State and privatisation of the NHS. There was a blockade at the North gate in the afternoon, before we heard of the terrorist attacks in Glasgow. Following this the camp took the decision not to blockade for the rest of the day and Sunday. A candlelight vigil was held in the evening at the Coulport gate.

Day Two at Strident

The day started off with a blockade of the Faslane North and South gates by Nottingham and Bradford students, involving ingenious superglue blockades. There were 9 arrests. Back at camp the program of workshops kicked off in the morning with NVDA and blockading trainings. David Ferrard ran a workshop on folk protest songs, and the Oxford Research group ran a workshop on influencing the decision making process. A representative from the original Tent State in American ran a workshop on their work and the tent state concept. The day rapped up with an (accoustic) gig from David Ferrard.

The first day of Strident!

Today we put finishing touches to the camp and people arrived and set up their tents. First thing in the morning a group from Merseyside blockaded the North gate, with four arrests. About lunchtime a Trident Nuclear Submarine passed, so we went to make our presence known.
